BA Communication Celebrates 10th Anniversary with Kara David at Manila Tytana Colleges

On March 2, 2026, Kara David delivered a talk on media and information literacy (MIL) at Manila Tytana Colleges in Pasay City as part of KOM-Usapan: BAC Isang Dekada sa 50 Taon ng Tytana. The event was organized by the College of Arts and Sciences through the BA Communication program in celebration of the program’s 10th anniversary.

During her talk, Kara David addressed the growing challenge of distinguishing factual information from misinformation amid the rapid development of digital platforms and artificial intelligence. She cited findings from Social Weather Stations showing that many Filipinos have encountered or believed false information online.

Ms. David stresses the urgency of strengthening MIL and putting emphasis on the responsibility of upholding truth among all individuals who engage in digital platforms— the media practitioners and the general public.

“Hindi lang ang nasa media at communication ang may obligasyon sa katotohanan. Lahat po tayo na gumagamit ng social media… We are all (information) consumers and content creators. The fact that you are consuming, you are using, you are posting on social media means that you also have an obligation to the truth,” David said.

She emphasized that sharing of fact-based content, critical production and consumption of information is an obligation that does not rest solely on journalists. It is everyone’s responsibility.

“Palaging sinasabi na fake news is a big problem. But this is what I always tell people—the best weapon against false information is still honest to goodness journalism and truth telling,” she added.

Ms. David’s talk concluded with an open forum where students and employees were given the opportunity to ask questions and discuss issues related to fact-checking, responsible content sharing, and media ethics.

The event formed part of Manila Tytana Colleges’ 50th anniversary activities and highlighted the role of its BA Communication program in promoting responsible communication and informed engagement in today’s digitalized media landscape.
